If you have followed the blog, you have seen wonderful pictures from a snowy Crete. Maybe pictures you never thought you would see. We got even colder weather, and more snow the last week. It was snow everywhere, also down by the coast. It started with sheath in the morning on Sunday the 8th, but by noon it was snowing. The situation was the same, more or less, all over Greece on Sunday. The whole country in the freezer like the Greeks say!

The temperatures was from + 2-3 Celsius, to – 16 in the north and on the high peaks here in Crete. It has been snowing even in all the towns and the beaches, this is not normal for Greece as you may know. We feel sorry for the refugees that lives in tents up to north Greece and some islands in a terrible state. Many of the islands are cut of from the rest of the country, and it is still snowing in many places.

In my part of Old Town, Splanztia, it snowed Sunday morning, and we still have snow in our garden, even the day after. Have a look at Splantzia on Sunday. And look at these photos from our beautiful harbor in a snowstorm and with a “ boiling”sea!

Snow in the yard

The last time Crete had too much snow was in 2004. Then the snow stayed on the ground for 3 days! The coast and the town was white too!
Since Christmas it has been snowing in all Greek cities, and many high villages has been cut of. Then again at New Year’s eve, even lower, and now the final blow!! People are getting a bit tired of the snow by now.The most of the time the roads are open, but some are close again and again, especially up to the mountains. Omalos here in the area is one example of this. They have been isolated and without electricity 3 times since Christmas. They have more than 1/2 meter of snow as we speak.

In Athens it has been freezing, but not that much snow this year. But in the rest of the country people are being asked not to drive if it’s not an emergency! But every town open up places for the homeless, and heated rooms for anyone that has a cold house.
The news are full of reports from the whole country, you wouldn’t believe it is Greece that you see!
We enjoy it, and love to watch the snow on every peak around us here in Chania!

It is very unusual for us to have snow on lower peaks and hills near by the sea.
